Local Teacher Publishes Her Childhood Predicaments

(Yorba Linda, California) – Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District teacher Corinne Griffiths has spent the last 4 ˝ years testing her comedic book about the trials and tribulations of her youth by reading it to her students.  Their laughter and tears encouraged her to keep editing and perfecting her work.  Corky Eckelsbriar, the fictional work based on actual events, is now hot off the press.

“Over the years, I’ve kept track of the anecdotes of my family members’ lives and finally decided to create a book about the unusual events of my childhood,” Griffiths explains.  “My parents were prominent community members and my sister was perfect in every way.  I, on the other hand, was a tomboy and was constantly getting into trouble.”

After receiving several rejection letters from publishers, Griffiths decided she didn’t want to wait for a publisher to accept her manuscript.  She started A Cappella Publishing this last June, choosing the name because of her interest in music and its meaning... unaccompanied.

“Self-publishing gives you control over every aspect of production,” she said.  “My book is packed with actual 35mm pictures that illustrate all the funny stories in the book.  Another publisher might not have wanted certain pictures included.  I was also able to keep the glossary that some editors told me not to include,” Griffiths continued. “This book not only entertains, but it builds vocabulary.”

The book is set in Keystone City, the fictitious name for Norwalk, California, where Griffiths grew up.  It includes stories about birds, dogs, and horses, which were all a large part of Griffiths’ childhood.  A sequel covering her junior high escapades is in the drafting stage.

In addition to teaching, Griffiths also writes a weekly “On Campus” column for The Yorba Linda Star and The Placentia News-Times, where she lauds the accomplishments of people and events in the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District.
